NASA SPACE APPS CHALLENGE
THE BIGGEST HACKATHON IN THE WORLD
The International Space Apps Challenge is the world's biggest mass collaboration focused on Space and Earth еxploration that takes place over 48-hours in more than 150 cities around the world with 15.000 participants across 6 continents.
NASA, ESA, CORPORATES, STARTUPS, SCIENTISTS
The event embraces collaborative problem solving with a goal of producing open-source and commercial solutions аpplicable to both Earth and Space. Coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, technologists, national space agencies, private corporations and startup teams come together. NASA is leading this global collaboration along with ESA and number of government collaborators and local organizing teams.
MOON BY 2020 AND MARS BY 2033
Space is not the exclusive domain of the government. Industry is democratizing space, launching more vehicles from more launch sites than ever. Moon Express and Planetary Resources are just two of the start-ups in the global space sector estimated to $324 billion, and what some argue could become the first trillion-dollar industry. Industry players believe space exploration is due for a quantum leap, with commercial test launches abounding this year.
INNOVATION AND COMMERCIALISATION
Emerging commercial opportunities in low-Earth orbit are made possible by the growing U.S. and Europe commercial spaceflight industry, which will play a leading role this century in opening space for public and private innovation. New markets are emerging creating the potential for private research and business innovation in space across the medical, energy, transportation, communications and advanced manufacturing industries.
UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTICIPANTS
ATTENDING SPACE LAUNCH BY END OF 2017
The winning team from Skopje (up to 3 team members) will get once in a life-time opportunity to visit NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida and witness a real rocket
launch into Space (organisation of the trip, airplane tickets and site entrance are included). The winning team will be selected by the judging committee for the Skopje location.
In spite of the name, this hackathon is much more than just apps. There will be challenges that involve robotics, data visualization, hardware, design, and many other elements! This year the focus will be on solutions applicable on Earth as well, while the top sponsors can also negotiate to add their own challenges.
This event represents a unique opportunity to bring your efforts and ideas in front of local and international audience and to win the attention of NASA, ESA and some of the biggest
commercial space companies and international investors and venture funds. You might also find new cofounders as well as your first clients.
STUDENTS AND FREELANCERS
During the event you can join a team in Skopje or in some of our partners locations such as Vienna, New York or Silicon Valley (onsite or remotely). This competition might define your future and direct your further growth in the areas of innovation, high technologies and space endeavours. It might help you get a internship, training, a dream job or decide to become a start-up team member or a cofounder.
NASA SPACE APPS CHALLENGE IN MACEDONIA
HOW IT ALL STARTED
Back in 2012 today’s NewMan’s CEO - Irena Chaushevska traveled to one of the NASA centres in California, USA with a vision to bring this event in Skopje that at the time was taking place at around 40 locations worldwide. This became a reality just a year later and this year we are celebrating our 5th anniversary.
WHAT HAVE WE DONE BY NOW
In 2014, the first year when the event took place in NewMan’s premises, we partnered with almost all student organisations in the country and managed to create the highest number of projects worldwide (30). Skopje was also acknowledged by NASA as one of the 10 cities with the highest number of participants (156).
In 2015 and 2016 we spread the event across Macedonia and initiated hackathons at the University campuses in Tetovo, Ohrid and Bitola.
In 2016 the project of the Skopje team AVIS (a smart wristband and an Android application for drone operators) became one of the 5 Global finalists for the People’s Choice award while the project of Team GG who created solar jump jet prototype concept won the 2nd place in Central and Eastern Europe.
FROM MACEDONIA TO SPACE
In 2015 NewMan's also initiated this hackathon in several cities in Central and Eastern Europe such as Vienna, Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade, Prishtina, Tirana, for where our team recruited and trained the local Leads and provided ongoing support for their teams. This opened further possibilities for regional collaboration among participants and wider promotion for the sponsors. By 2016 NewMan's was officially acknowledged by NASA as Coordinator of the European locations.
In 2015 Irena Chaushevska was invited to attend the event Mainstage for the NASA Space Apps Challenge that took place in New York where she joined the NY Space Tag team that worked with big data. The team managed to win the local event in New York and later was announced by NASA judging committee as one of the 5 global winners. As award in December 2015 Irena and Anita travelled to Cape Canaveral in Florida to witness a space launch.
SILICON VALLEY HOST
In 2016 NewMan's applied to host the Silicon Valley location and despite all odds it won. It partnered with SAP and IBM and within couple of weeks organised one of the best
hackathons that year.
In 2017 the Silicon Valley location managed by NewMan's was selected by NASA as USA West Coast Mainstage for the event. In addition NewMan's was invited to CoLead the New York location (the East Coast Mainstage) and also added Berlin on its map of locations that it operates directly.
